Highland Public Library, member of the Mid-Hudson Library System and located in Ulster County, NY, has recently completed their Sustainable Libraries Initiative Certification. The Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) is an award-winning project to create leadership and provide tools to mobilize libraries to think and act sustainably.
From the construction to function, the library’s strategic plan covers six key goals achieved to earn SLI certification. These goals included creating awareness for public programs, providing diverse materials satisfying patrons’ interests, providing access to technology, providing a welcoming public space for meetings, programs and study, creating diverse programs to meet the interests of the community, and developing a highly-trained motivated staff to provide excellent service.
“We are proud to be the first library in the Mid-Hudson Library System to achieve certification. Participating in the Sustainable Library Certification Program helped us strengthen our commitment to be environmentally and fiscally responsible, and ensure social equity,” says Julie Kelsall-Dempsey, Library Director.
