The Highland Public Library joins the growing number of NYS libraries eliminating late fees for overdue books. Beginning Nov 1st late fees will no longer be assessed as long as the item is returned. Community members with current fines on Highland items or items checked out in Highland will be able to ask their fees be waived.
Patrons will still be responsible for returning items to the library in a timely fashion. The library will continue to assess fees for replacements of lost or damaged circulated materials.
Two years ago the library tested the waters by eliminating fines for children under 18 and seniors 65 and older. “By removing late fees, we feel that we are removing a barrier that would prevent someone in our community from using library resources. Our patrons are more important than the fees that prevent them from returning to the library. We strive to make The Highland Public Library accessible to all,” says Julie Kelsall-Dempsey, Library Director.
